The
Club
HARPENDEN
Scottish Country Dancing Club was formed in 1955 having as its aims the
promotion of Scottish Country Dancing. Since then it has always put
special emphasis upon providing an opportunity for experienced dancers to meet
and dance the newer and more challenging dances. It is a tribute to its
founders that these objectives remain forefront in the Club's activities. Having said that we recognise that it is our privilege and
responsibility to provide an opportunity for beginners to take their first
steps. At the moment our beginners class is not operating but we are working on it.
Weekly
Meetings
The Club meets every
Tuesday evening throughout the year, except August and the Christmas and New
Year Period, at Lourdes Hall, Southdown Road, Harpenden, HERTS
AL5 1PF
The
evening is lead by a practiced member of the club who devises a weekly
programme of around 12 dances aimed at the experienced dancer. Most
of the dances will be taken from a core of 150 popular dances maintained by the
Silver Cross Dance Group (see Contacts & Links) but others may be chosen by
the leader for that evening. . If necessary dances will be
"talked" through, some will be “walked” as a demonstration by one of
the sets, chosen at random from those on the floor, but if it is new, it will
be “walked” by all sets.
There
is no step practice and dancers are expected to be familiar with standard
formations and steps. We currently start
at 7:45 to practice, on request, movements, such as rondelle
or diamond pousette, before the normal dancing
starts.
Evening
Fees are £2.50 for members and £3.00 for non-members but regular attendees are
expected to take up membership of the Club, at an annual subscription of £3.00,
and to take on other matters relating to its smooth running.
That
the Club is a very friendly one, goes without saying and whether dancers come
as singles, couples, or groups they can be sure of a genuine welcome..

Annual
Ball
The
Club usually holds an Annual Ball on the first Saturday in March of each
year. Dancing is always to a first class Scottish Country Dance Band and
the Ball attracts dancers from the surrounding counties and beyond.
Our programme is always a mixture of
traditional and modern.
