The Club

In 2005 HARPENDEN Scottish Country Dancing Club celebrated its 50th  birthday.  Dedicated to the promotion of Scottish Country Dancing it has always put special emphasis on providing an opportunity for experienced dancers to meet and dance the newer and more challenging dances that were regularly coming into circulation.  It is a tribute to its founders that these objectives remain forefront in the Club's activities.

The Club meets every Tuesday evening throughout the year, except August and the Christmas and New Year Period, at

The evening is lead by a practiced member of the club who devises a weekly programme of around 12 dances aimed at the experienced dancer.   Most of the dances will be taken from a core of 150 popular dances maintained by the Silver Cross Dance Group (see Contacts & Links) but a few will be new; acquired by the evening’s leader from a variety of sources.  Dances are “walked” as a demonstration by one of the sets, chosen at random from those on the floor, but if it is new it will be “walked” by all sets.

There is no step practice and dancers are expected to be familiar with standard formations and movements as well as steps.

Evening Fees are £2.00 for members and £2.50 for non-members but regular attendees are expected to take up membership of the Club, at an annual subscription of £3.00, and to take on other matters relating to its smooth running.

That the Club is a very friendly one, goes without saying and whether dancers come as singles, couples, or groups they can be sure of a genuine welcome and be absolutely confident that they will dance every dance.

Annual Ball

The Club usually holds an Annual Ball on the first Saturday in March of each year, though this year there has been an enforced change.  Dancing is always to a first class Scottish Country Dance Band and the Ball attracts dancers from the surrounding counties and beyond.   Our programme is always a mixture of traditional and modern.
